Hills to Heaven long run – note to my running buddies
All,
Well I finished, but it wasn’t pretty. I’m sore now especially my knees. Tomorrow I have to be on my feet all day (volunteered to help at a Lego robotics competition at Round Rock High School). Hopefully that should be fun – maybe I can find a chair and do my job from a sitting position – ha ha ha yeah right. In any case, I should have stuck with you all. I don’t know what got into me. Each time I either waited or caught up to you I somehow kept pushing and ran out ahead and shouldn’t have. Where did you go Glenn? Being alone made the run even longer. No talk, no companions – just my freakin’ thoughts to keep me company – and those were not very positive for the second half death march. I missed you all very much today. I walked most of Ladera Norte, and I’m glad that the hills were much smaller after that – sheesh I know that Rogue loves hills, but enough already. So I was dragging at the end and just wanted it over. Got to the park in 2:56. It was only 16 miles and I can’t even think about doing 18. The high point was getting to Celeste’s home, seeing her, meeting her hubby Matt, and the kids especially Zack, and getting a bottle of water from the mail box then heading out. I carried that bottle from there to the end. It was very much appreciated – thank you very much Celeste, that was special.

Decker 20K
Well, I took off yesterday to rest my left knee. In the afternoon I helped Matthew and Beth purchase a couch and love seat at IKEA. Katie and they did all the heavy lifting. I could still feel my knee when I went to bed. Today I woke at 5 AM, and left the house at 6 AM. It only took about 20 minutes to get to the Travis County Exposition Center. Once there I just rested in the car. No warm-up. I wasn’t going to chance it. After listening to a podcast for about an hour I found my friends (actually they found me), and we waited for the start at 8 AM. Afterwards they were ahead of me. I felt bad because I couldn’t keep up with them. Running carefully I was worried that the knee would stiffen up. I was compensating trying to not stress my left side, but soon I felt that my right side was tightening up. So I just tried to run slow, steady, and evenly. After a while the tightness went away. I knew left knee was there, but it was not painful which was a relief. Soon I caught up to Celeste around mile 5, and on the first big hill she began to walk and I went on ahead. Then I caught up to Glenn shortly afterwards. He had a tough night and wasn’t feeling well. His stomach was upset. Together we passed Chris at a water stop at mile 6. Then slowly Glenn fell behind and I went on by myself. The miles passed and so did the big hills. On the final few miles on flats I just kept going. When we got back to the Expo I was really starting to breathe hard. On the last few tenths of a mile I looked down at my watch it said 1:59:07. I could see the finish. So I pushed as hard as I could and finished in 1:59:37. I was totally spent.

Sore Knee
I’m going to have to retract my offer to run with Glenn on Sunday at Decker. I went out for an easy 5 mile run day before yesterday, and yesterday my left knee was stiff. So I’m worried. This knee has been “talking to me” over the past few weeks. After the run last Saturday in the cold, and the practice which I pushed real hard and probably shouldn’t have. Afterwards I felt it too, and it is getting worse. Also dear ol’ Decker has been my nemesis in the past where I’ve tried to start out hurt, and I’ve ended up barely able to walk at the end or flex my leg afterwards. I feel that I’ve got to take it easier. So that’s what’s happening with me. Naturally if I’m out there at Decker and warmed up and my knee is not stiff or hurting then Glenn should watch his back because I’m coming to get him. Just kidding.
Update: I was just walking around the mall with my daughter today and I’m feeling the knee AND I’M NOT EVEN RUNNING – ugh. So I’m upset, but dealing with it. I plan being at Decker, doing the warm-up (which will probably be the deciding factor of whether I run it and if I call it quits, then that’s it for the distance challenge [that’ll be the second time Decker has caused me to drop of of that]), and if I decide to do it then taking it easy on the run. I appreciated what Celeste told me by e-mail that she’ll be there to break wind.- oops – I mean she’ll let me draft behind her and walk the hills together which I might have to.

Country Club long run
Well “it was a dark and stormy night” fits very well with the long run today. I tried to dress warmly in long tights, two long-sleeved shirts and a pullover, two pairs of gloves, hat and ear band, two pairs of socks (one pair, a plastic bag, and another pair to keep my feet dry), and my new shoes. Only about 30 people showed up at 6:30 AM today in the cold and pouring rain at the Balcones Country Club. Indeed I was surprised to see Glenn there. We ran together which was great. Within the first mile of downpour we were soaked through and puddle after puddle our shoes were dripping. We were probably lugging a few extra pounds of rain and sweat soaked clothing and shoes for the distance. By half way the plastic bags on my feet had ruptured and were now filled with water. I know I wouldn’t have completed it in 1:37 if Glenn wasn’t there helping me – running beside me, just being there. We didn’t talk much mostly because of the constant rain noise, and my struggle to breathe as we ran hill after hill. This was definitely a good prep for Decker – I just hope the weather is better. There was one hill in particular that I just started walking while we were in a small cluster of four runners – I was beat, and Glenn said that he would stay back with me. When I heard this instead of continuing to walk I started to run again because I just couldn’t do that to him – I couldn’t have him walk too, it just wasn’t right. So from then on we ran the entire rest of the way. He helped push me when I didn’t want to go on. For that I very much want to thank him. So although we didn’t complete at the pace we wanted, we adjusted and we completed – wet, cold, shivering and miserable through and through. What fun.
New Shoes
I bought a new pair of Nike Structure Triax 10s at RunTex today. Hopefully it’ll help reduce the load on my knees a bit. I’m concerned that the last pair seemed to only last about 200 miles (in my humble opinion). [The last ones I bought at the beginning of September 2007] I might need to start considering inserts or heaven forbid seeing a doctor. By the way I did try some inserts in the new pair at RunTex, but instead of being softer and more cushioned they seemed stiffer and more controlling and didn’t help. Naturally I didn’t buy them.
